Close-Up: Honda NSX Concept

.

I’d have to say, I feel Honda cheated us a little bit with the HSV; but it looks like they’re looking to make up for it in the coming years.  Honda has been lacking a flagship sports car in it’s lineup for some time now.  Sure, they had the S2000, but that wasn’t really super car status – plus they don’t even make it anymore.  So what we’ve been left with for the past few years has been…well…the CR-Z.  A mildly sporty, hybrid hatchback.  Not quite what you’d consider ‘flagship’.  All that is set to change, however, we probably will not see production until 2015.  I have a feeling the new NSX will be a game changer in terms of  technology.  While they are staying true to the NSX’s mid-engine roots, they’ve added a bit of a twist.  Click past the break for more shots of the 2012 NSX Concept at the Honda Welcome Plaza, Japan.

As you’ve probably read, or assumed by this point, that the new NSX will have a hybrid system of some sort.  You’re right – that’s pretty standard Japanese right there.  This system, however, isn’t what you think.  While the naturally aspirated V6 engine will supply power to the rear wheels, Honda’s new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) will be responsible for giving some love to the front two wheels via two electric motors.  Two electric motors?

.

.

.

Yeah, that’s right; two electric motors.  One motor for each of the front wheels.  These motors, control (independently) the torque of each front wheel; giving and taking power based on cornering need.  This, combined with the MR layout and lightweight body, will provide a truly unique driving experience.  Think driving on rails and you’d be pretty close.

Like most concept cars, we can expect the appearance from now to production will change significantly.  As it stands now, can you see any resemblance to the last produced model of the NSX?

.

.

It may take a keen eye, but there are subtle hints of it’s older sibling.

Don’t believe me?  Here’s a first gen.  – compare the two.

Official Announcement from Honda

Hey, they’re stealing the first gen!  Just kidding.  You may be wondering about all the kids in suits headed down the stairs.  Well, they’re basically the future of Honda.  My friend was telling me that they are all fresh out of University and set to work for Honda starting April.  Who knows, maybe they will help design the production NSX.  On a side note – check out the Honda Welcome gals…and the huge Asimo plush.  Thanks for visiting.  Be sure to check out a video of the display at JDM Clips.
