Vol 3 – V.1

There’s a tremendous amount of history that kind of flies under the radar when it comes to the roots of the concept of ‘hashiriya’ in Japan.  As is the case in most of life, a lot of what we see today is derived from a heavy influence on trends from the past.  When the current generation of tuners in Japan were growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, before they were old enough to drive cars, they were introduced into the world of motor sports through motorcycles.  To celebrate this derivation of history, Yuji, owner of Pro Shop Wave, assists in putting together the Bari Dori Ten event at Mobara.  This year was the 3rd annual event, and the turnout was as good as ever. Sekinei was on hand to handle media for the event, as per Yuji’s request!

Pro Shop Wave…..

In the 80’s and 90’s the Kanagawa Prefecture touge’s were ripe with young street racers and their small displacement CBR’s and NSR’s.  The 250’s were easy to ride, and at the time you were able to get a motorcycle license at age 16.  It not only gave them the rush of racing, but it also provided an outlet for personal stylistic expression.

You’ll notice many of the bikes have one of the two headlights blocked off, a play on the styling of the bikes that raced in the Suzuka 8 hour Endurance races.

This CBR from Bullet Boys is a good example of one of the more mild builds, complete with (I think) a MC21 NSR tail conversion.

IMG_9066-Edit「TWO BROTHERS」のCBR400RR達だ。
「TWO BROTHERS」

These two bikes from Two Brothers were pretty wild.  I thought that the orange one really embodies Yuji’s taste in style; if you took a look around Wave you’d see some similarly extravagantly painted pieces.

IMG_9061-EditThank you for the curry!

Funky Boy’s

IMG_9073-EditThis old and somewhat tattered ‘Racing Team Shooting Star’ crew neck is a testament to how long these groups have been together.  Late 80’s Japan was a mecca for this type of lifestyle.

Stick around for part 2 of BariDori – drifting!

  1. Thanks for posting this, something different. I loved attending the bike events when I was in Japan.

Seeing coverage of this style and motorcycling brings me all sorts of joy. There isn’t anything like this out there that I have came across recently and I feel like it’s one of the cultures I love. I thought I was the only one that stays up late to watch old 80’s/90’s touge. A huge thank you for this.

Hello! I’m traveling to Japan for 12 days at the end of January/early February. I was wondering if you had any details on more events like this / how I would go about finding more information on Pro Shop Wave. My searches don’t seem to be super viable. Thank you!
